Murrayfield
Home of Scottish Rugby
Capacity: 67,500
The very first International Rugby match was played at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, on Monday, 27 March 1871, on the cricket field of The Edinburgh Academy. By 1890, the SFU had begun a search for an area of ground with the intention to purchase it for the Union. The search was fraught with difficulties, disappointments and frustrations. People simply did not want an international rugby ground in their locality.
Eventually, in 1897, the Union purchased ground at Inverleith, Edinburgh, for the sum of £3,800, the money being raised by a debenture issue. Thus the SFU became the first of the Home Unions to own its own rugby ground, complete with stand.
Looking to expand the game, Murrayfield was purchased and the institutions name changed to SRU.
Murrayfield was officially opened on a sunny day on 21 March 1925. England were the visitors and a more fitting climax to the international season could not have been scripted: it was pure Boy's Own stuff! Support for Scottish Rugby went from strength to strength and in 1975, Murrayfield hosted the biggest attendance at a rugby game, with a crowd of just over 104,000 watching Scotland play Wales.
In 1994, the Princess Royal reopened the doors of Murrayfield Stadium with a 67,500 all-seater stadium. Many supporters of Scottish Rugby were able to purchase 50-year debenture seats for the new Stadium plus there was an increase in the official corporate hospitality available at the ground within its new function suites and corporate hospitality boxes.
The Murrayfield Corporate Hospitality Boxes all have a spectacular view of the hallowed Murrayfield International Pitch. Each of the boxes offers a private facility within which 12 guests can be entertained with official seats for the match outside the box.
The Thistle & 1925 Suites are excellent hospitality facilities in the West Stand at Murrayfield for entertaining. Situated just a short walk from your premium seats, these suites can either be shared or larger numbers may consider taking an exclusive suite. The suites can hold between 30 and 500 guests.
As hospitality demands have now outgrown Murrayfield Stadium, The Murrayfield Club has been established just outside the ground of Murrayfield, adjacent to the West Stand and also provides an excellent facility for corporate hospitality.
